Dorothy GaleThe Mundane WorldDorothy lives on a Kansas farm with her family and some farm hands. Dorothy does wish to see what’s “over the rainbow.” The Call To AdventureA tornado comes without warning and picks up Dorothy’s house with her inside. While up in the air, Dorothy hits her head and gets knocked out. Dorothy awakes to see a storm of confusing images that include seeing her stern neighbor, Mrs. Gulch pedaling her bike and turning into a witch. The house suddenly falls down and Dorothy takes a step outside to see an entirely different world. Crossing The ThresholdDorothy walks out of the house (literally crossing the house's threshold) and notices that the house landed on someone, specifically the Wicked Witch of the East. After the Good Witch of the North explains to Dorothy that she is now in the land of Oz, she instructs her to find the Wizard of Oz if she wants to return home. In order to do this, she must travel along the yellow brick road. The Path of TrialsDorothy meets new friends along the way; a scarecrow without a brain, a tin woodsman without a heart, and a cowardly lion. They all decide to go to the Wizard to see if he can give them all what they’re missing. The group is plagued by many obstacles on their way to the Wizard of Oz. Angry apple trees, the deadly poppy fields and the Wicked Witch flying in the sky spelling out “Surrender Dorothy.” The group keeps going and finally makes it to the Wizard who will only help them if they bring him the Wicked Witch’s broom. On the way to get the broom, the group is attacked by the Witch’s flying monkeys and Dorothy and Toto are abducted. The Scarecrow, Tin Woodsman, and Cowardly Lion rescue Dorothy at the witch’s castle, but don’t escape right away. The Wicked Witch starts the Scarecrow on fire and Dorothy instinctively throws water on him while also getting water on the witch. She melts and everyone is saved. Master of Two WorldsThe good witch tells her all she needs to do to get home is click her heels and say, “There’s no place like home.” Dorothy awakes from her “dream” happy to see everyone around her. She had learned that if you can't find your heart's desire in your own backyard, then you never really lost it to begin with. Submitted by: Steve Kessel |
