Ebenezer ScroogeThe Mundane WorldEbenezer Scrooge is a very unhappy, selfish, and cold-hearted man. He has disgust for the poor, believing the world would be better off without them. He treats his clerk, Bob Cratchit, poorly as well. The Call To AdventureWhile spending Christmas Eve alone, Ebenezer is visited by the ghost his deceased business partner, Jacob Marley. Jacob tells him of how he spent his entire life exploiting the poor and now is doomed to walk the Earth for all eternity in the chains of his own greed. Crossing The ThresholdIn order for Ebenezer to understand how to change his life and not share his own fate, Jacob Marley tells him that he will be visited by three ghosts; the ghost of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Yet to Come. Ebenezer must follow them and allow them to show him what he needs to realize in order to change his future. The Path of TrialsHe is first visited by the ghost of Christmas Past. The ghost shows him of a time when Ebenezer was a schoolboy and his father left him around Christmas time. This turned him into an unsocial person who did not empathize with anyone. The ghost then shows him how much of a workaholic he was and how his love for money caused his fiancée Belle to leave him. The next ghost that visits him is the ghost of Christmas Present, who shows him the happiness of his nephew, who is middle class, and of his clerk’s impoverished family. The Cratchits live on very little, but still seem to be very happy. Finally, Ebenezer is visited by the ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. This ghost showed Ebenezer the happiness of the people he knew would find from his death. He is also shown the consequences of all his actions up to this point, and they are dire. Master of Two WorldsEbenezer awakens on Christmas morning, finding that he is given the chance to change his ways. Taking everything he saw the previous night, he becomes the model of kindness and generosity. All those around him are touched and he grows to be the man who always kept Christmas the way it should be. Submitted by: Steve Kessel |
